Young caregivers gained confidence, creativity, and practical childcare skills during Pioneer Technology Center's (PTC) Babysitting Academy held last week. Led by instructor Emily Goff, the academy provided students with hands-on activities and essential knowledge to help them become responsible, prepared babysitters.
Throughout the academy, students learned how to safely interact with children ages one to four while developing engaging activities to keep young children entertained. Participants assembled their own "Magic Babysitter Bag" filled with fun, low cost activities they can use while babysitting. They created “boo boo bunnies” for minor bumps and bruises, made bug themed I Spy games, crafted pom poms for tic tac toe, learned simple origami, discovered creative ways to build indoor forts, and made friendship bracelets.
Safety was also a major focus of the academy. Students received hands on instruction in adult, child, and infant CPR, along with learning how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on both adults and infants. These lifesaving skills provided participants with the confidence to respond appropriately during emergencies while caring for children.
In addition to childcare activities, students explored the business side of babysitting. They discussed how to find babysitting jobs, important questions to ask parents or guardians before caring for children, appropriate rates for their services, positive ways to redirect children's behavior, and safe techniques for cutting food for young children.
