Biomedical and Nursing Summer Academy Students

Pioneer Technology Center (PTC) recently hosted two engaging summer academies simultaneously, giving area students the opportunity to explore careers in science, biotechnology, and healthcare through hands-on learning experiences.

Students participating in the STEM-Biotech Summer Academy spent the week diving into the fascinating world of biotechnology. Led by instructor Brennyn Evans, the academy allowed young scientists to step into the role of researchers through interactive lab activities that combined science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Throughout the week, students explored microscopic organisms, conducted experiments, and gained firsthand experience using laboratory equipment and scientific processes. The academy emphasized critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific discovery while helping students build confidence in the scientific method. Through the use of microscopes and real-world laboratory activities, participants gained a deeper understanding of biology and biotechnology while exploring future career opportunities in STEM fields.

At the same time, students in the Nursing Academy explored a variety of healthcare-related topics under the guidance of instructor Miranda Ramhorst. Participants learned about infection control and methods for preventing the spread of illness, first aid and emergency response, body systems, and the composition and function of blood.

The Nursing Academy incorporated creative, hands-on activities designed to make learning fun and memorable. Students created candy models of the spine and DNA, made blood slime to better understand blood components, practiced treating simulated wounds, and participated in interactive games. One popular activity challenged students to discover how effective their handwashing techniques were using a black light demonstration.

Both academies provided students with engaging opportunities to explore potential career pathways while developing valuable knowledge and skills in healthcare and science.

The STEM-Biotech Summer Academy and Nursing Academy reflect Pioneer Technology Center's commitment to providing innovative, hands-on learning experiences that encourage young people to explore their interests and unlock their potential.
