Health Career students from Pioneer Technology Center recently attended the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) spring leadership conference in Oklahoma City. Approximately 2,000 high school and adult students from different health care programs in the state of Oklahoma came to compete in one of fifty different competitive events.
Ismael Fiorina of Blackwell won first place in his competitive event, Clinical Specialty. He was responsible for preparing a lengthy portfolio that included being videotaped while performing a selected skill from a health care profession. Fiorina’s skill was wrapping instruments for surgery, getting them ready for autoclaving, the sterilization process instruments go through prior to surgery. Fiorina job shadowed at Blackwell Regional Medical Center’s surgery department to prepare him with real-life experiences in order to accurately demonstrate his skill. With assistance from the Business and Information Technology Education (BITE) students at Pioneer Tech, Royce Rowe, also of Blackwell and Donovan Clinton from Ponca City, Ismael was able to produce a video of that clinical specialty.
Fiorina will now advance with another Pioneer Technology Center student, JoEll Carlisle testing in Concepts of Health Care, in June 2009 to compete with students from across the nation at the National HOSA Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
