Sixteen students recently graduated from Pioneer Technology Center’s (PTC) Practical Nursing (PN) program. Included in the event, graduates participated in a candle lighting ceremony and recited the Nurse’s Pledge and were officially pinned. According to Joella Francis, PTC PN coordinator, ten of these students have already passed the Oklahoma Board of Nursing licensing examination and are presently practicing as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN). Catchum Gregory, LPN, a former Pioneer Tech practical nursing student, and Joella Francis, retiring practical nursing instructor were speakers for the event. PTC’s Practical Nursing program has a flexible format and its scheduling allows students to attend class on a part-time or full-time basis as long as they meet curriculum and attendance requirements. Instructors are available in the classroom, lab and clinical areas for group and individualized instruction. Practical nursing students are trained in all aspects of nursing including basic sciences, medications, growth and development, disease processes for all ages, pregnancy and childbirth, and nursing ethics. In addition to classroom instruction, students have opportunities to help them gain clinical experience at various health care sites.
