HOSA Students Advance to Nationals
Recently Pioneer Technology Center’s Biomedical Sciences Academy and Health Careers Certification programs took ten students to the state HOSA competition. Pictured left to right, Andrea Hays, Biomedical Sciences Academy, placed first in Epidemiology; Megan Reece, Health Careers Certification, placed second in Medical Photography; Taylor Tate, Biomedical Sciences Academy, placed second in Biotechnology; and Ismael Fiorina, Biomedical Medical Sciences Academy, placed second in Clinical Specialty. These four students will be going to Orlando, Florida in June to the National competition.

More than 1,900 students and educators participated in the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) State Leadership Conference. HOSA is the CareerTech student-led organization associated with health occupations education. The Event was held at the Meridian Convention Center in Oklahoma City. There were more than 50 different competitive events that students participated in during the conference. Many of the preliminary events were held via online testing through a partnership with the CareerTech Testing Division and their health certification web testing services.

Pioneer Technology Center’s Biomedical Sciences Academy and Health Careers Certification programs took ten students to the state competition. These four students now advance to the national competition in Orlando, Florida in June.

“Our students spend a lot of extra time outside of class, working hard on their HOSA events. We are so proud of all of our students who competed at the State level, and especially proud of our students who will be representing our school at the National HOSA competition,” stated Jamie Sawyer, Biomedical Sciences Academy instructor.

According to Debbie Shumaker, State HOSA advisor, “Twenty-six events had online tests where students competed prior to the finals at the state conference. This has saved the state and HOSA more than $17,000 in transportation costs, hotel expenses, registration fees and substitute teacher pay.”

She added that Oklahoma was the first state HOSA association in the United States to conduct competitive events via online testing.
By placing in the top three positions, the winners qualify to attend the Nation HOSA Leadership Conference. Last year, Oklahoma sent over 200 students and advisors to the National Leadership Conference. In 2009, Oklahoma’s delegation brought home 37 gold, silver, or bronze honors with additional 18 placing in the top 10.
