Young Entrepreneur Takes On Medical Business

Lance Madison services an oxygen machine in the newly renovated Madison Medical building. For almost one year Madison has taken the reigns at the medical supplies and service business in Fairfax and has become a young, successful business owner with help from Pioneer Technology Center.
Over the last year a Fairfax business has made a transformation on Main Street. Lance Madison purchased Martin Medical Supply and Service last November from Sue Martin. The store has been in the Fairfax area for more than 14 years now and has become Madison Medical.
Madison completed his training as a respiratory therapist at Pioneer Technology Center in 2007. He went to work at Oklahoma State University Medical Center to gather some experience before taking over the business. Madison worked closely with Martin who had talked with him about selling her business to him if he joined the field.
Madison Medical provides medical equipment from wheelchairs and power chairs to hospital beds and oxygen supplies in a 12 county region. The company goes into homes to assist with bath safety, service any medical supplies equipment they sell and make life as easy as possible for their clients. A large portion of their clientele is through nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Madison works with the ADvantage program, which is for lower income patients and is available for those who qualify for Medicaid.
Madison relies on the assistance of Pioneer Technology Center’s Business and Industry Services to help him as he builds his business. From lessons on Quickbooks to help with expanding business into possible government contracts, the services at Pioneer Technology Center have been instrumental in his business.
“I’ve already steered a few people that direction but if you want to get started [in business] they are the open book,” said Madison. “They’ll tell you where to go, what to do, and how to do it.”
Madison has given the medical supply business a new look, including a large sign outside the store added this month. In addition, he has expanded the business to include government contracts, added four counties to his service area, nearly doubled the number of patients they serve and added two new employees. New employees mean new jobs for Fairfax.
This five-employee business has a unique marketing model too. Madison, with the help of four friends, sets up a band at assisted living centers in his 12-county region and plays 50’s, 60’s and country swing music for its residents. The band also sets up a booth explaining the business during their show to bring in new business.
His youth and interest in Fairfax have helped Madison to focus on the business and increase its profitability. The store recently passed its accreditation for Medicaid that ensured the store has a complete policy and procedure manual, stores all items properly and follows all Medicaid guidelines.
The future is bright for this small shop as it ventures out to become the premier durable medical equipment supplier in the area. That is good for Fairfax too as business growth is a boon for the economy.
