Mary Scott Receives COABE Award
Pioneer Technology Center’s (PTC) Adult Basic Education (ABE) director, Mary Scott, recently accept a National Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE) Incentive Grant Award. The grant, in the amount of $1,500, was for the production and presentation, locally and statewide, of a PowerPoint presentation on retention called “Keep Them Coming.” The presentation was made at the National COABE conference held Louisville, Kentucky. The conference was held at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville and featured events at Churchill Downs and Muhammad Ali Center where some 900 participants from all over the United States attended. The award was presented to Scott at the COABE Awards Luncheon that recognized exemplary educators, individuals and programs that have made a significant contribution to adult education and literacy. These grant awards are funded through the Dollar General Stores. Scott says that keeping students motivated and attending classes is a real concern for her and she wants to make a difference in her program. This grant will help her continue to make that difference. In her acceptance speech, Scott thanked the COABE organization and Dollar General for their generosity and the wonderful opportunity. Scott will be presenting her grant project at the next COABE conference in Chicago, Illinois in March 2010.
